Leg 5 – Townsville to Longreach

Porsche rally car on an outback track

James Calvert-Jones / Ben Hardy, 1985 Porsche 911

Only two competitive sections in 805km of driving, with 128 (16%) competitive in only two sections, ‘Burdekin Dam’ and ‘Doongmabulla’.

Starting at the Burdekin Dam the former was the longest section of the event, and parts had a grading not long before which made some of the road very fast with the early part wide and smooth with sweeping bends over crests and into dips, and there were numerous creek crossings to keep the crew alert.

After refuelling and service at Belyando Crossing it was on to the other section, ‘Doongmabulla’, which was a property track with numerous gates and some creek crossings (some with water) to watch out for and was rough in patches. At times the course, over a variety of surfaces, was hard to see. Then on to Longreach with refuelling available at Aramac.

Service crews had a tough job this day if they wished to cover all possible points.

First vehicle left Townsville at 0600 and arrived at Longreach at 1700. Competitive sections of 96 and 31km.
56 started the Leg and 53 finished.
